On 31 May 2026, Munnade Social Organisation conducted a Financial Literacy Workshop for 50 women garment workers at Rajarajeshwari School, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru. The session was facilitated by Ms. Abhinaya from Svatah Educational Foundation and focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge to make informed financial decisions for themselves and their families.
For many garment workers, managing household finances involves balancing multiple priorities with limited resources. Recognizing this reality, the workshop introduced participants to the six pillars of financial literacy: Income, Expenses, Budgeting, Savings, Investment, and Loans. Through interactive discussions, real-life examples, and visual learning tools, participants explored how these pillars shape financial well-being and long-term security.
A key highlight of the session was the distribution of the “My Finance Book” to every participant. This practical resource enables women to track their income and expenses, plan budgets, set savings goals, and build greater awareness of their financial habits. The book also serves as an ongoing learning tool, reinforcing concepts covered during the workshop.
Using the story of Nidhi’s family and a short educational film, participants learned the difference between active and passive income and how families can better allocate their earnings. Discussions on budgeting emphasized the importance of distinguishing between needs and wants, while introducing the 50-30-20 rule as a simple framework for managing money. Participants also reflected on the importance of involving family members, including children, in financial planning to create a culture of transparency and responsibility at home.
The workshop further highlighted the role of savings in preparing for emergencies and reducing dependence on debt. Participants were encouraged to build savings habits and develop support networks that can help them navigate unexpected financial challenges. Through the example of a growing mango tree, the facilitator explained how investments differ from savings and how thoughtful financial planning can help individuals achieve their dreams and future goals.
At Munnade, we believe that financial literacy is a powerful tool for empowerment. By strengthening women’s understanding of money management, we aim to support garment workers in building greater financial resilience, confidence, and independence. We thank Svatah Educational Foundation and Ms. Abhinaya for their valuable contribution to this learning initiative and look forward to continuing our efforts to promote financial well-being among the communities we serve.
