Financial Literacy Awareness Program

Venue: Patel Gullappa School, Bangalore
Organised by: Munnade Social Organisation

Munnade Social Organisation conducted a Financial Literacy Awareness Programme on 18 January at
Patel Gullappa School, with the participation of nearly 300 women garment workers. The
programme aimed to strengthen women workers’ understanding of everyday financial matters and
promote long-term financial security through shared and community-based systems.
The session focused on practical topics such as savings habits, understanding financial systems, state
and central government loan schemes for the working class—especially for women—and the role of
co-operative societies in supporting workers and their families. The strong turnout and active
participation reflected a clear interest among women workers in better managing their finances and
planning for the future.

The programme began with a brief welcome by Narayanaswamy, who shared the purpose of the
session and highlighted the importance of financial awareness and working together as a
community. Children from Munnade’s Care and Support Centre opened the event with a short song,
creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Garment workers Chikamma and Geetha shared their personal experiences of being associated with
Munnade. They spoke about how community-based platforms helped them feel supported during
difficult times, build confidence, and access timely guidance. Their stories resonated strongly with
participants, many of whom could relate to similar challenges in their own lives.

The session included a simple and practical explanation of women-led co-operative societies,
covering key aspects such as regular savings, shared ownership, transparent record-keeping, access
to loans, and social security benefits. Participants were encouraged to actively engage in co-
operatives, emphasising that these institutions thrive through member participation and shared
responsibility. Information was also shared about the Yashaswini Card, a cashless health treatment
facility available for families at a nominal additional cost, which generated keen interest among the
workers.

The programme was enriched by the presence of Lakshmipathayya, Additional Registrar of Co-
operative Societies, and Nagesh H T, Director, District Co-operative Societies Federation. Both guests
spoke about the benefits of women-led co-operative societies and underlined the importance of
financial literacy for women’s empowerment and economic independence.
The General Secretary of Munnade shared the organisation’s journey, reflecting on how garment
workers earlier had very limited support systems. The address highlighted how Munnade has grown
by building worker-led structures rooted in financial discipline, shared accountability, and mutual
support among workers.

The programme concluded on a joyful note with a song by Narayanaswamy. Overall, the session
strengthened participants’ understanding of financial literacy and co-operative systems, while
reinforcing the value of mutual support and working together as a community, and Munnade’s
continued commitment to the well-being of women garment workers.
