On 29.03.2026, an International Women’s Day program was held at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, opposite Amanikere in Tumkur. The event was jointly organised by District Kannada Sahitya Parishad Tumkur, Munnade Social Organisation Tumkur, Karnataka Writers’ District Unit Tumkur, and the Women’s Anti-Violence Federation Tumkur.
Around 400 women garment workers took part in the program, coming together to share their experiences and listen to one another. The gathering felt open and honest, giving many women a chance to speak about things they usually keep to themselves.
The chief guests for the event included Shri K.S. Siddalingappa, President of District Kannada Sahitya Parishad Tumkur; Smt. Asha Bhat K.N., Vice President of the District Writers’ Association Tumkur; Justice Smt. Noorunnisa, Tumkur District Judge; Shri G.K. Kulkarni, a senior literary figure; and Smt. Yashoda P.H., General Secretary of Munnade Social Organisation.
A play titled “Garment Workers’ Life” was performed during the event. It showed the everyday struggles of garment workers—the pressure at work, the difficulties at home, and the physical and emotional stress many of them go through. Many women connected deeply with the play, as it reflected their own lives.
Following the play, there was a meaningful interaction between Justice Noorunnisa and the workers. Women spoke openly about issues such as workplace violence, sexual harassment, mental and physical stress, lack of proper grievance systems, pressure to meet production targets, and the strain these challenges put on their families, including rising divorce rates.
Justice Noorunnisa listened carefully and acknowledged the seriousness of these concerns. She encouraged the women to continue raising their voices and assured her support. She also mentioned that if a list of garment factories is prepared, she would take the matter forward by speaking with factory management and relevant authorities to work towards solutions.
Overall, the event was not just about marking the day, but about creating a space where women felt heard, supported, and stronger together.
